The Carpenters Apprenticeship Program is an 8,000-hour training program (requiring approximately 4 years to complete).  Program  credit can be given for previous experience.  Applicants are tested and evaluated on a regular basis, but an appointment is needed.

Qualifications to enter the apprenticeship program:

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and physically able to perform the work of a carpenter.  They must have a high school diploma, GED, or proof of enrollment in a high school equivalency program.  Reliable transportation is necessary.  Apprentices must be able to get to the training center and to jobsites throughout the state.

Prospective apprentices take two tests:  a math qualifying test and a tape measure test.  Experienced carpenters may take a written journeyperson’s test.  In cases of a language barrier or difficulty with written testing, hands-on testing can be given by appointment.  Applications and tests are also available in Spanish.

Applicants also fill out two applications, one for training and one for union membership.  Applicants are interviewed to determine eligibility and entry level.

Following evaluation, those who qualify at the journey level are referred to a Carpenters Union Business Representative for job referral and Union membership information.  Applicants who are found to be eligible for the apprentice program can enter the program when they are placed with a union contractor for employment. 

Upon acceptance to the training program, apprentices must join the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America and register with the State of Connecticut Department of Labor and Apprentice Council.

Apprentices receive on-the-job training while working alongside Journeyman Carpenters and they also receive Related Training at the training center in Yalesville.  Related Training takes place four weeks a year in one-week intervals per quarter.

The training hours are 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Thursday and 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Friday.  If Apprentices are eligible, they can collect unemployment for the week they are in school.

Apprentices are paid by the contractor for on-the-job training.  The starting pay rate is 50% of a Journeyman Carpenters’ pay rate, which is determined by the collective bargaining agreement between the Signatory Contractors and the Carpenters Union.  Apprentices may start at a higher pay scale if they are given credit for previous training or work experience.  Pay increases are given for every 1,000 hours of training in 5% increments with a 15% increase after the final 1,000-hour increment of training to 100%.

Upon completion of the 8,000-hour apprenticeship program, apprentices graduate to Journeyman level and receive certification from the Connecticut Department of Labor and The United Brotherhood of Carpenters.  Apprentices must comply with The Connecticut Carpenters Apprentice & Training Fund Policies and be members in good standing with the Carpenters Union to participate in the Apprenticeship Program.
